In this article I aim at explaining the calorie shifting diets, the basic and the theory behind them. They are all promoted like they are new diets but actually calorie shifting, calorie cycling or whatever they call them, are as old as dieting itself.
The main purpose of shifting calories is to manipulate your metabolism. The metabolism controls how the body should deal with food under certain circumstances. If there is a great surplus the metabolism puts this into your energy reserves, the fat cells.
Our body and metabolism is made to hunt, run, love and deal with starvation. It is not made to sit in an office all day long, go by car the 5 miles home, eat a meal excessive in energy, sit in front of a silicon based machine (tv, computer) and then go to sleep in a nicely heated bedroom. Our body is made to do hard labor on a minimum of resources. Not exactly the way we live right?
However, we could use the way the metabolism works to our favor to lose fat. Remember that there is a major difference between losing fat and losing weight. It is the fat we want to get rid of and nothing else. We want our muscles to stay fit.
Several of the fast weight loss diets may be called fad diets, but the deliver what they say right? They often claim that you lose weight and you will lose weight. Just not the kind of weight you might be looking for. If you lose 5 pounds in a week with the latest fad diet, you really lose 2 pounds of water, ½ pound fat and, get this, 2 pounds of muscle!
Losing muscle makes it harder to lose fat. Why? Because muscles is the kind of tissue that consumes most fat (energy). We want our muscles, remember that!
Back to the calorie shifting diet. The metabolism is not adjusted to what you eat today, it doesn’t calculate its usage from what you have in your blood flow right now, it calculates this from what you ate the last couple of days. This gives us an incredible opportunity to mess around with it. We tell the metabolism that we are going to do one thing but instead we do the complete opposite. Makes sense?
Think of yourself driving in your car, the car in front of you signals to go right but instead turns left, how do you act? Well, at least I would be very surprised.
How do you think that your metabolism will act when you turn left instead of right? It will get confused as it is not used to these circumstances. It figures that it is better to be safe than sorry and speeds up the metabolism, i.e. burns more fat.
Ok, but what will happen when the metabolism learns that you turn right instead of left? Well, it adapts and starts to behave in favor of the body(once again it stores fat). So what do we do then? Of course, when we signal left, we turn left too. Now your metabolism thinks you are crazy once more and it goes into a supercharged mode again.
In this article I’m talking about your metabolism as a person, but of course it is just a function that has a set of rules on how to behave (that almost is the definition a person).
This is the basics of the calorie shifting diets. Cool, huh? The theory behind it is very easy to comprehend, and it is actually easy to practice too.
