Michael and I finished a 40-day Juice Fast in September. It was quite the experience. It started out as a result of a client of mine who had lost 78 pounds and wanted to lose “that last 20 pounds.” The only thing I could suggest at that point in her program was to do a juice fast.
Well, I had never done a juice fast and it reminded me of the story of Mahatma Gandhi where the woman came up to be blessed by him with her son. She wanted Gandhi to tell her son to stop eating sugar because it was bad for him and he was abusing it. Gandhi told the woman to come back in a month. A month passed and the woman returned with her son.
“Well, we’re back. Tell my son to stop eating sugar.”
“Stop eating sugar,” said Gandhi.
“Why couldn’t you have told him that last month when we were here?” She asked.
“Because then, I was still eating sugar,” said Gandhi.
So I decided to go on the juice fast with my client. Of course Michael, my ever-supportive husband, volunteered to do it with me. We’ve discovered some awesome juice recipes, lost a bunch of weight and got pretty tired of washing our juicer, but I’d say it was worth it. I focused on the experience, the detoxification process, my clarity of mind, and experienced the empowerment of making it through the process.
I figured if I had never experienced a long juice fast, how could I ask my toughest cases to do it? That would be hypocritical.
There were definitely some days where we just had to CHEW something. On those days we had a serving of watermelon, half of a carrot, a ripe tomato from our garden or a teaspoon of almond butter. I spent many a day really wanting a great steak. Maybe it was because it seemed that all of our neighbors were barbequing ALL THE TIME! I almost lost it one night. I broke down and had half a cheese stick.
And I sure did miss chocolate, which was strange, because I hadn’t actually craved chocolate except during “that time of the month” now for a couple of years (when I did my first 5-day water only fast.)
Yep. Coffee, chocolate and beef seemed to be the biggest things for me to give up. For Michael, I think it was coffee. We had a cup every now and then–especially when we are brewing the stuff for our coffee enemas. Frankly, I’d rather relax and sip a cup of good coffee than stick it up my anus. Oh well. I have learned to appreciate a good organic coffee enema. It is SO much more effective than any other kind of enema. We should know. Lord, we’ve tried a few different kinds of enemas during that fast!
Each morning when we wake up, we would have a cup of Potassium Broth then do our Dry-Brushing. Then it was off to the shower to finish up (most days) with a hot and cold alternating rinse. That seemed to be really hard to do for me because I just wanted to stay warm and prefer the hot shower instead.
I built a Juice Fast Blog page to record all the daily meanderings and the different juices we had.
Maybe I’ll give up sugar next… NOT! (Although a 5-Day Water Only Fast really cuts your cravings.)
