Working With a Personal Trainer

Personal Trainers. When you think of them, you think of somebody showing up at Oprah’s house at five a.m. and grilling her as she runs on the treadmill, lifts weights, and does massive amounts of crunches before heading off to shoot her TV show.

While that is one reality, there is another more common one these days. Many personal trainers are employed by gyms, community centers, and hospital-supported fitness centers. Their main purpose is to teach you to exercise properly to avoid injuries and get the best results from your time spent in the gym.

Many centers will give you an hour or two of personal training as a sign-on bonus when you become a member. Even if you have a lot of workout experience, it is to your benefit to take them up on this offer and follow the advice of your personal trainer. They can give you tips on what will work for what you want to accomplish during your gym time. They can show you the proper way to use the exercise equipment contained in your gym. They can help you with timing and intensity issues. They can also offer pointers on what to eat to get the best results along with the physical exercise you are doing.

If your gym doesn’t offer a free trainer, look into working with one for a few hours to get the benefit of their expertise. Especially if you’ve been working out for a while and aren’t seeing the results you’d hoped for, a trainer can often help you step up your workouts to get you where you want to be.
