Personal training is not a luxury that only the rich and famous deserve to spoil themselves with. They are not a glorified gym buddy or therapist with a stop watch. Personal trainers are health professionals with knowledge and understanding of the human body, movement, and nutrition. They are coaches, motivators, and your best support team. But above all of this they know exactly how to get you towards your fitness goals and the safest way to do so.
Working out at gyms I see some of the craziest workout exercises, or stunts is what I like to call them. The average person will pick up a Men’s Health or Shape magazine and try to replay those workouts without a clear understanding of the correct form, common deviations, correct load, or if that exercise is even necessary for their particular goals. Not everyone can go through the same workout routine and come up with the same end result. Not only that, but doing exercises with bad form repeatedly can have negative effects on your body, you can tear and strain muscles, or ligaments in one bad move.
Many people feel they can march into a gym do a few to a dozen strength training exercises with no formal training. Not only do they believe they are going to reach their goals, but they believe they can, without sacrificing the possibility of hurting themselves.
Think of it this way….
Imagine your car breaks down while you are driving home from work. You pull over to the side of the road, pop open your hood and peer underneath to see what the problem is. After a few minutes of blankly staring at the engine you realize you don’t have the slightest idea what is wrong with your car. Just then a man approaches you and tells you that he just opened up an automotive garage right down the street. It has all the equipment and tools you would need to repair your vehicle. All you need to do is pay a small fee for a daily pass, and you can have access to all the tools and equipment needed to repair your vehicle. So you have your car pushed to the garage and pay for the daily pass. You get your car up on jacks and you are ready to get to work. Then it dawns on you, you still don’t know how to access what’s wrong with your vehicle let alone know how to repair the problem, and what tools you may need to use in order to do so. See the fact of the matter is, you may have all the tools and equipment needed to fix your car. However, unless you have the knowledge of how the car functions and how to use the tools, there is no way you are ever going to repair your car. That is why we have mechanics to do that for us. And that’s why we have personal trainers for health clubs.
It is crucial that everyone works with a personal trainer at some point to learn the basics of human movement and correct form for basic exercises.
