If you’ve decided that you want a personal trainer, then perhaps you’ve already got one in mind. If you haven’t then here’s how you can make sure that you choose the right personal trainer for you.
1. You’ll need to know why you want a personal trainer. Perhaps you need the motivation to lose weight, or want help exercising due to a medical condition. You might be training for a specific sporting event, or want to improve your general fitness.
2. You’ll also want to decide what you want to achieve with your personal trainer. Perhaps you want help doing certain exercises properly, or want a structured training plan so that you peak for a certain race, or other event.
3. Will you want to go to a gym to have your session, or will your personal trainer meet you elsewhere and train outside the gym? Which will be best for you?
4. Ask your friends or colleagues for recommendations, or see if there are any testimonials or other people you can contact and see what they think of the trainer you’re considering.
5. When can you start with your personal trainer? If they can see you straight away, then they might not be busy, which could indicate that they aren’t very good. Alternatively, they might have had a cancellation.
6. What experience have they had? What can they recommend to you? Are there any guarantees, or special offers? Do they really offer the service that you need?
7. What help and other advice can they give you? If you’re training for a specific event rather than trying to lose weight, will they be able to understand what you’re going through at the 17th mile of your first marathon, or when you’re trying to improve your triathlon performance?
8. What sort of exercises do they recommend for you? Losing weight will require different exercise, different weights and different numbers of repetitions to building muscle.
9. You’ll want your trainer to be tough, but likeable. You won’t want to spend most of your sessions talking, but you don’t want to be afraid of asking for help when you need it either.
10. It’s important not to choose solely on price. It’s much better to pay a bit more for the experience and results you need, and to reach your weight loss or fitness goals, than to choose somebody who isn’t up to the task, just because they’re cheap.
