Safe Brainpower Supplements

Imagine just popping some pills and feeling your brainpower growing. There are four safe supplements that you can use this way. Two of them may even be free.

Vinpocetine

This is an extract derived from an alkaloid found in the Periwinkle Plant. It is used as a cerebral vasodilator to increase blood flow to the brain, which improves oxygenation and so increases mental alertness and acuity. Recent research also suggests that it may be one of the most powerful memory enhancers available to date.

Vinpocetine acts on the circulatory system as well as on the brain’s metabolism, resulting in enhanced cognitive function. The increased blood flow to the brain allows more oxygen and glucose uptake by brain and nerve cells, nourishing them and preventing cell death from lack of oxygen. Interestingly, vinpocetine has also been shown to improve micro-circulation in the eyes, which can help maintain healthy vision and assist with healing eye related disorders.

Phosphotidyl Serine

This drug (PS) has been shown in clinical studies to increase one’s lucidity and the rate of learning. PS activates cell-to-cell communication, improves the functioning of the special receptors found on cells, helps regulate cell growth, and prepares cells for activity. In other words, it can help increase your brain power. It may also reverse memory decline. The best news? Phosphatidylserine has no known adverse side effects.

Both of these supplements can be found at your local health-food store. You might find the following natural brain boosters for free.

Gingko Biloba

Ginkgo has been shown to increase blood flow to the brain. Where do you find a Ginkgo tree? They are often planted in parks. Some of my friends and I used to go to the local college campus where these tress had been planted, just to eat a few leaves when we wanted a brain boost. Ginkgo is also inexpensive. You can buy the capsules or tea at any health food store.

Saint John’s Wort

This is a common weed. It may even be growing in your yard. Studies show its usefulness in treating long-term depression. While its brain enhancement qualities are less documented, many people swear by its temporary mood-elevating effect, and our brains do tend to function better when we are happy.

I used to just collect it in the yard and make tea of it (the botanical name is Hyperacum Perforatum). To do this, pour a cup of boiling water over about a tablespoon of chopped leaves. It is also available inexpensively, either as an extract, capsules containing the dried leaves, or as loose dried herb.

The supplements listed here may help increase your brainpower. They are also safe by most accounts. However, often individuals have specific allergies or sensitivities they are not aware of, so be careful in trying any new herb or supplement.
