Do you want to lose fat and build that lean sexy body of your dreams? If so, you might want to question that exercise bike buying decision.
If you are searching for an exercise bike, chances are that you are seeing information on the different varieties of bikes (stationary, recumbent, or spinner bike), opinions on the best manufacturers (Schwin, Proform, or Nordic track), or other buying factors like warranty, construction, and price.
But before you click that ‘back’ button and gather more research for your exercise bike buying decision, let me ask you a question those bike peddlers (sorry about the pun) don’t want me asking you . . .
What are your fitness goals?
And more importantly, what makes you think that an exercise bike is going to help you achieve those goals? Now, if you will forgive the assumption, I imagine that your fitness goals are to burn fat and build a leaner sexier body. If that’s true, I congratulate you on making fitness your goal. With so much obesity out there, it’s good to know that there is another person out there who takes their health seriously. If losing fat is your goal, though, it’s my job to hit you with a myth. A myth so pervasive that it is supporting a multi-billion dollar cardio equipment industry…
Myth: Cardio exercise is the best method for burning fat.
This is complete bunk. In fact, most people will impair their fitness goals by doing long repetitive cardio. I can give you two forms of proof of this very fact. The first you can verify with your very own eyes. Take a tour through any gym and take a look at the bodies performing the exercises. Which bodies model how you want to look? Now take a look at those bodies over time. Do they improve?
In my gym, and many others that I visit when I travel, the fittest bodies are doing weight training. The people whose bodies never change are in the cardio room for 30 minutes or more. Don’t take my word for it. Take a look and see with your very own eyes. The second form of proof is scientific. The science of exercise physiology has made tremendous strides in the last couple of years. One of the factors that have influenced exercise physiology is studying the training practices of the fittest athletes.
The training habits of highly successful athletes have inspired the testing of their methods. The result? High intensity interval training is the best method of cutting fat, and building the kind of long lean muscle that will serve you over the course of your life.
It was once thought that weight training was only for the benefit of bulky “muscle heads.” But, intelligently-planned training can be the most efficient way for people like you and me who just want to be fitter, flatter in the belly, and healthier.
