Currently, there are no “anti-aging drugs” available to extend the lifespan, but new drugs are being developed and tested on animals. Such drugs hold the potential to prolong human life, according to professor Spindler.

Previous studies have proved that a nutritious diet with small amounts of calories can extend the life of the mice by almost forty percent. Dr. Spindler and his research team are trying to identify drugs that may lead to longevity effects or health benefits without a low-calorie diet.

The experts are also looking at the gene pattern induced by low calorie diets and the drugs that can mimic the changes brought by low calorie diets even if they are taken late in life. For instance, a drug used for treating diabetes may produce some of the health benefits of low calorie diets. Some drugs, if they are taken for a lifetime, may raise a low toxicity level.

The amount of calories eaten is more important than the type of food, when it comes to lowing down the aging process.
