My experience as a Long Beach Personal Trainer has taught me that my clients really only want two things: a good body, and to spend as little time in the gym as possible to achieve it. In a way, I can appreciate their impatience. Everyone is busy nowadays, and between school, work, family, and a social life, squeezing in time to exercise can feel like an extra strain on an already jam-packed life.
While there is nothing you can do to get that body you’ve been wanting over the course of a weekend, there are certain things you can do make sure the time you spend in the gym is as effective as you want it to be. Here are some of the most effective tips I have doled out during my career as a Long Beach Personal Trainer to clients who wanted to lose fat and gain muscle while spending minimal time in the gym.
Rest No More Than Ninety Seconds Between Sets- While weight training, it’s important not to spend too much time resting between sets. Your muscles don’t actually need that much to clear the lactic acid that gives you that “weak” feeling you get when you perform your last rep. And when you keep the rest between sets short, you increase the amount of stress on the muscle, which leans to a firmer, leaner appearance. You also encourage the release of muscle-building hormones, which can help you get into that beach body that much faster. So as you complete you last rep on each set, be sure to take a quick glance at your watch to make sure you aren’t spending too much down time before you pick up the weights again.
Warm Up – Nothing is neglected in the world of fitness more than the warm up. Which is shame, because with that five extra minutes you spend warming up your body before your main your workout, you might be able to get a toned physique much quicker.
A good warm up should be made up of two parts: some light cardio to get your heart pumping, and a good stretch. The cardio is designed to increase the blood flow to your muscles, making them more relaxed and more ready to take on the workout. The stretching also increases blood flow, but it also makes you more limber, thus decreasing the chance of injury. An added bonus of regular stretching is that over time it pulls and separates your muscles, giving them a better aesthetic appearance.
Think Positively- Believe it or not, thinking that you are getting a good work improves the effectiveness of your workout. A study performed at Harvard University in 2007 showed that people who engaged in physical activity and believed that they were really exercising got more benefits than those who did the exact same activity, but didn’t believe they were really exercising.
So before you start your workout really tell yourself that this will be a fantastic workout that will be a major step towards getting the body that you have been wanting. After the workout, congratulate yourself on giving it your all, and feel good at everything you’ve accomplished that day. Thinking fit can be a major step towards being fit
